Wheel Chair Lifts

Wheel chair has been one of the most amazing inventions. It has helped many people with leg disabilities to carry on with their day-to-day task. Aside from that, old people who are too weak to walk can still reach places with this device around.

The only problem is that people using wheelchairs have trouble going up on stairs or overcoming vertical barriers. Health care providers may assist them but to carry the device with the person on it is quite a tedious task. On that note, one of the wheel chair solutions that have been introduced is the use of wheel chair lifts.

Getting to Know Wheel Chair Lifts

Also known as power lift, it is primarily used to raise manual or motorized wheel chair. It can also improve a disabled person's mobility by making hard-to-reach places accessible. Purchasing this kind of lifting device is very convenient if you have a disabled family member or relative, especially to those living in homes with stairs. As to public locations, lifts can greatly help in transferring them in and out the vehicle.

Kinds of Wheel Chair Lifts

Wheel chair lifts have two different purposes. One is for vehicle use and the other is for home use.

For Vehicle Use

There are two kinds of lifts for vehicle use - the inside and the outside. Both of them have their own advantages and disadvantages but they can be both useful depending on the user's preference.

Inside lifts have four types - platform, hoist, rotary and under vehicle. On the other hand, outside lifts have only one kind. These lifts are either manual or power operated. The former is less expensive while the latter is more convenient.

For Home Use

Wheel chair lifts for home use basically has three types, which are the following:

  • Inclined platform - They work like a stair lift and can be installed easily without having to modify the stairway.
  • Vertical platform - It generally functions like an elevator.
  • Portable - This can be carried around because they are foldable. It can be operated in three different ways, through the use of hydraulics, electricity and battery.

Considerations in Choosing Chair Lifts

Since these devices are not all portable, one must carefully choose the kind of lifts to install at home. Bear in mind that every lift (whether for vehicle or home use) has different mechanics to function. Therefore, in some devices alterations might be required. In addition, if you are tight on budget, you may also want to consider the cost of getting the wheel chair and the modification cost that might come along with it.
